A prong-set coin bezel uses small tabs on the back to retain the coin's edge. Correct seating comes first; the tabs then hold the coin in that seat.
Start with the fit
Before you begin
Confirm the exact coin issue, diameter and thickness against the bezel's listed compatibility. Decide which face should show and how it should sit beneath the bail. A close size is not a confirmed fit.
Work at a well-lit table over a clean, soft cloth or padded tray. Handle the coin by its edges. If it is rare, proof, graded or valuable as a collectible, ask a coin specialist before removing it from a holder or mounting it. An open-face bezel does not protect the coin like a sealed capsule.
Check your coin's size before fitting →What you'll need
- A clean, soft cloth or padded working surface and good lighting.
- The setting tool recommended for your particular bezel.
- Optional clean cotton gloves for handling the coin.
Use a tool suited to the tabs, with a smooth contact surface and good control. A butter knife or a poorly fitting screwdriver can slip and mark the coin or setting. If the listing does not specify a tool, ask us before starting or have a qualified jeweler fit the coin.
This guide describes bend-over tabs on the back of a coin bezel. It does not apply to every type of jewelry prong or setting.
Take it one step at a time
Installation steps
-
Inspect the tabs and identify the back
Locate the retaining tabs on the back of the frame and check for bent, cracked or damaged parts. If tabs are already folded down, do not repeatedly bend them open and closed. Ask for guidance before proceeding.
-
Position the coin in its seat
Arrange the bezel so you can access the back tabs while supporting the piece on a clean, soft surface. Place the coin in the intended seat with the face you want to show pointing toward the front of the bezel. Align the design beneath the bail before securing it.
-
Check the fit before moving any tabs
The coin should sit flat and evenly in the intended seat without force. Check the edge all the way around. Do not bend tabs to compensate for a coin that is too large, too thick or loose in the frame.
-
Bring the tabs over the back edge gradually
Use the setting tool and method recommended for the particular bezel. Keep the coin supported and apply light, controlled pressure to a tab, directing it over the back edge. Work gradually around the setting, alternating opposite tabs where the design permits, so the coin stays centered. Keep the tool off the coin's face.
-
Check that each tab retains the coin
Each tab should contact and retain the back edge as intended by the setting's design. Do not crush tabs flat, gouge the coin or keep bending a tab back and forth. Stop if a tab cracks, resists controlled pressure or will not hold the edge correctly.
-
Inspect the finished setting
Over the padded surface, check the front and back. The coin should remain evenly seated, with all retaining tabs secure and no loose movement. If a tab lifts, catches or leaves the coin loose, have the setting checked before wearing it.
When to stop and ask for help
Stop if the coin will not sit flat, a tab is damaged, the tool slips, or securing the tabs requires force you cannot control. A qualified jeweler can assess the setting and install the coin.
Prong tabs are not intended for repeated opening and closing. If you want to remove or change the coin, seek advice before bending them again.
Before each wear
Inspect the tabs and coin seating, especially after a snag or impact. Do not wear a pendant with a raised, damaged or loose tab. Check your chain and bail fit separately before attaching the pendant.
